Did you know that 80,000 unaccompanied minors enter the United States every year? Did you know that homosexuality is illegal in 76 countries?
I am pleased to have taken an in-depth course on the Psychology of Immigration in the New Century. While much of it was a review of knowledge for me, I did learn a lot about why immigrant students tend to perform exceptionally well in school despite their obstacles, not limited to xenophobia, poverty, language barriers, and the acculturation process. The course also taught me how immigrants are so incredibly resilient and can cope with tremendous levels of stress and obstacles.
Although immigrants do struggle with mental disorders, such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), their ability to cope with their symptoms is uncanny and vastly different than American nationals. East Bay Area Therapy is a proud supporter of immigrants from countries all over the world and continues to serve them in practice.
